Weekly Bulletin

Gloria O'Dowd

I was born in Woodville and schooled in Taranaki at Tarata, Egmont Village and Inglewood High Schools.  I went to Australia in 1979 for my big OE and met Bill and we married in 1989. I spent 14 years working for an International Manufacturing company in Sydney, in the Customer Service and order department.  I was the Customer Service Manager for 7 years. After this Bill and I ran our own retail business on the Central Coast of NSW for 19 years.  I had by this time spent 36 years living in Australia and we decided it was time to retire and in 2015 returned to New Zealand leaving behind our grown up children. We have 5 children between us, 12 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.  All of them live in the Australian states of New South Wales and South Australia.  I have been a Rotarian since August 2006.
Guests this week were
Jean and David Powell
Meals on Wheels Inglewood and Red Cross.
I hope you are enjoying reading the weekly bulletin. If you have any ideas on how we can improve on it please let me know and I would be very happy to implement if possible.
Some weeks we have little to no photos to include in the bulletin and when this happens I was thinking it would be nice if you would like to have a section for personal photos. Photos of perhaps personal projects, family celebrations, holidays and trips etc. This way we can all learn more about each other.  If you have photos you would like to include please email to me at

Meals on Wheels Inglewood and Red Cross.
Red Cross was founded in 1850 by the Swiss.  The Red Cross symbol is the reverse of the Swiss flag.  It was founded after seeing the horrors of the battle fields of Europe and it was originally set up to deal with the after math of war and disasters.
Red Cross principles are having concern for all humanity, to be impartial, neutral and independent.  To promote voluntary service, foster unity and strive for universality.
Worldwide ther are Red Cross organisations in 192 countries. New Zealand Red Cross celebrated it centenary in 2015.  Nowadays, NZRC are involved with Refugee resettlement and disaster preparedness.  In NP there is a DWST (Disaster Welfare Support team) who are trained and prepared to help in a disaster and they have a fully equipped trailer with food, bedding etc that may be needed.
Meals on Wheels started 70 years ago in Christchurch.  There are now 33 services throughout the country.  Some 3300 volunteers delivered 630,000 meals in the 2019/2020 year.
The service in Inglewood commenced 30 years ago and meals were prepared by Nelsons Bakery.  Now, Inglewood meals are prepared by Marinoto and the recipients pay for them.
A roster of 17 drivers allows each driver to be called for a weeks delivery (lunchtime) every 3 months.  This takes about an hour and only in Inglewood.  At present there is 18 meals being delivered daily.  Volunteers always required if anybody is interested to help out.

Brian and Adrienne took a little trip from Whanganui to Te Kuiti via SH4 and we had to name place names along the trip.
Noel told us about his trip to Rotary house to update the supplies and David Stachurski was there cleaning the outside of the building foyer and around to the kitchen entry.  He has done a marvellous job including picking up all the screws and nails that the builders left.  He will be invited to dinner next week as a thank you.
